Common Garbage Disposal Problems and How to Fix Them

Garbage disposal is an electrically-powered appliance that will be fixed usually under the home kitchen sink between the drain and the trap. This appliance will work on breaking down food waste into small pieces so these can easily go down the drain. If your garbage disposal is clogged, leaking, jammed, or humming then immediately you need to take steps to fix it.

There are lots of common garbage disposal problems but the good news is most of the problems can be fixed quickly even by yourself. Not all the problems need to be repaired by a pro, thus saving time and money.

Jammed Garbage Disposal

This is one of the most common problems that the homeowners face with their garbage disposals. If you have a doubt that there’s a jam, turn the switch on and listen carefully for the annoying hum.

This humming noise will help you know that something is between the shredding ring and the impellers. Use an offset wrench to resolve by yourself. Insert it into the bottom of the garbage disposal and gently turn it clockwise. Call expert plumbers to resolve the problem if the problem is too serious

Consistent Leaks

One of the other common problems is leaking. When this occurs, shut down your disposal and try to fix the problem yourself. Probably, the top flange will be the culprit for leakage, but leaks can certainly be found anywhere so make a call to an experienced plumber to effectively resolve the issue.

Constant Clogs

Clogs are very common garbage disposal problems in every household. Though it can be resolved quickly, it can occur often. One of the easiest ways to resolve your clogging issue is by not allowing it to happen in the first place. You should not toss oil, grease, excessive large chunks of food, corn husks, or any fruit peels into the disposal. These items will surely cause clogs. If you suffer with this problem for a long time, then clean your sink and disposal drains by a professional.

Leaks from the Bottom

If you notice that your unit is leaking, fix it quickly. If not, the water will easily cause potential damages to your floors and cabinets and cause issues with mold and mildew.

The first step to fixing a leak is to find where the leak is coming from. Check the plumbing hoses, outer case of the disposal, and drainage pipe.

If the leak is small, fix it by yourself. For large leaks, contact a professional for help.

When Should a Garbage Disposal Be Replaced?

Garbage disposals are not easily repaired. If a crack develops or any of the part wears out then it’s best to replace the entire unit. It’s probably time to replace your garbage disposal if you have any of the below issues,

  • Leaks that can’t be easily repaired
  • Frequent clogs
  • Frequent jams or excessive noise
  • Slower than normal operation

Garbage disposals are useful appliances that reduce bad odors, save you time, and reduce food waste. But, if you find any of the above problems then take immediate actions to fix it.
